Writing a novel like In Her Own Backyard is a deeply personal, solitary journey. It did start as a COVID project, after all! I spent years living inside my characters’ heads, mapping out their backstories, what motivates each of them, and how their character’s motivations could move the plot forward through gripping, suspenseful twists and turns. But once the book is out in the world, the journey completely transforms into something collaborative and public.
When I started exploring media outreach, partnerships, and cinematic possibilities for the novel, I realized I needed a way to translate the book’s atmosphere, themes, and visual tone into a concise visual story. That’s how the In Her Own Backyard Pitch Deck was born.
What Went into the Deck?
Creating a pitch deck required stepping out of “author mode” and into “producer mode.” I wanted a clean, gripping layout that captured:
- The Logline & Premise: The core tension that hooks a reader from page one.
- Character Dynamics: The psychological layers driving the suspense.
- Visual Mood & Setting: Evoking the atmospheric suburban backdrop where everything seems safe, until it isn’t.
- My Dream Cast for the Main Characters: Faces to put with the names and bring the story to life in the mind’s eye.
- The Clinical Layers: Something unique and valuable that most novels don’t have is psychological accuracy from a Perinatal Mental Health Certified EMDR therapist as the Author.
